Switching Spark Gaps (Triggered)

Gas-filled spark gap operating in the range of pressures of the filling gases from 100 Pa to tens of atm is the main and the most successful competitor of vacuum spark gaps with solid and liquid cathode. By certain parameter intervals a gas-filled spark gap possesses higher commutation speed (units of nanoseconds), smaller dimensions, and greater stability of temporary parameters. Spark gaps are used as high-speed commutators (for the protection of the equipment of high voltage power transmission lines and communication lines from dangerous overvoltage at thunder and other discharges; for the switching of highfrequency and highvoltage electric circuits etc).
Characteristics of the Triggered Spark Gap
Three-Electrode Spark Gap Switch (Triggered) offered by PLASMA, JSC is a ceramic-metal sealed off gas discharge trigatron-type device with a co-axial trigger electrode. Gas Discharge Tube contains no mercury and, due to an advanced design, features high reliability and long lifetime being operated under a wide range of environmental conditions.
Our engineers developed triggered Spark Gap Switches for voltages from 0.6 to 40 kV at pulse repetition rate from 0.1 to 200 Hz.
The form of the pulse current is damped sinusoid. Amplitude of the second half-period is not more than 20% from the amplitude of the first half-wave (RU-77D: 60%).
Main applications:
- pulsed installation for processing materials;
- installations with plasma focus;
- pulse power supplies for lasers and other pulse equipment;
- medical apparatus such as lithotriptors and defibrillators;
- processing systems for petroleum wells.
